The city is located 35 km North East of Bordeaux. It is named after a monk who founded it. In the 8th century, this monk retreated there into a hermitage. Churches, monasteries and other religious buildings were quickly built around the hermitage. Until the 11th century Saint Emilion was exclusively a religious village. The city was latter built there.
The vineyards, whose presence is proved since the Gallo-Roman ages, result from a qualitative soil and a favorable climate. Thanks to these vineyards the city acquired its fame all around the world. Indeed, the vine production and prestigious vintages have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO. The discovery of the site can be done through a wine tasting, through a visit to the Wines’ House, a visit to the trading houses or to Châteaux opening their doors to public.
Saint Emilion is also rich of an architectural heritage behind its ramparts conferring its authenticity. Underground, the city is crossed by 70 hectares of galleries, punctually sheltering wine storehouses or museums. Its troglodyte tradition is mainly represented by the monolith church and the catacombs surrounding the hermitage.
